Two hours after ESPN’s “Monday Night Countdown” broadcast aired an interview with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, the network’s senior vice president of sports programming, Michael Hickey, released a statement that criticized the network for “inappropriate” interviews with reporters and “false information” regarding the league’s investigation into former Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam’s child support payments.
In the video, which was first reported by Yahoo Sports, Hickey said the network has been “saddened” by the fact that “the league is conducting an investigation of Jimmy Haslam’s financial support of his children.”
“I was very disappointed to learn that the NFL has begun its own investigation of former Cleveland Cavaliers owner Jimmy haslam’s financial and emotional support of the children of his own children, including his oldest daughter, as well as his three daughters,” Hickey wrote.
“I think it is time for ESPN to move on.
We are disappointed by the timing and the information provided, and we have a duty to our viewers and our listeners to explain the findings of this investigation.
This has been a distraction for our viewers, and for our advertisers, who have been hit hard.”ESPN did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Haslam’s eldest daughter, Brooke, has been the subject of a slew of negative stories about her father, including claims she had a relationship with the husband of then-head coach Hue Jackson.
