Austin, Texas (AP) As many as 1,300 asthma deaths are reported in Texas each day, and it could be worse, according to a new study.
The study by the University of Texas Health Science Center at Galveston found that the city of Austin had the highest number of asthma deaths among all 50 U.S. cities.
It said the rate was nearly 40 times higher than the national average of 11.6 per 100,000 people.
The report comes as Gov.
Greg Abbott signed a bill on Tuesday that would increase funding for a program to train paramedics and emergency workers to respond to emergencies.
The bill would add about $10 million in grants to the Texas Department of Public Safety and emergency management to increase the number of paramedics and other emergency workers who are trained in asthma control and emergency medical care.
The city of San Antonio and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office are also considering expanding the emergency response to other cities.
